MY EXPERIENCES

IUPUI Class.jpg

KINE-P 403

KINE-P 403 is meant to help teach students how important it is to train the cardiovascular system, different methods available to train, and the physiological changes happening throughout a training regimen. Throughout the semester we engaged in different styles of training one day a week and learned about the training styles and physiology of the cardiovascular system on the other day of the week. We finished the semester with a class 5K.

When I found out this class involved a 5K I wasn't thrilled. I have never been a big fan of cardio and associated it with punishment because of prior experience's with sports. After learning that we had to run one I decided to go into it with an open mind and try actually training for it with the intention of trying my best to enjoy the experience. I found myself pleasantly surprised as the semester went on. I started with short easy runs to begin and slowly built the volume as the semester went on and found myself actually looking forward to running. One part of this class that I found to be extremely useful was the lecture portion especially learning about the different training methods and how to implement them. I used a lot of what we learned throughout the semester to modify my plan into something that was drastically different than what I had began with. When we finally ran the 5K not only did I find myself really enjoying it but I ended up running it significantly faster than I had predicted.

PARCS

Going into my 4th year of college I had about 2 years left and I was uncertain what I really wanted to do with my degree. I knew I had a couple different paths available and I wanted to try some of them out. After some asking around and applying I discovered the PARCS program. PARCS is an IUPUI ran program that stands for Physically Active Residential Communities & Schools. The program helps staff 2 locations with students from the school of health and human sciences. Students that work in the program get the opportunity to lead group classes and put together individual programs.

When I first started working at PARCS I wasnt sure if it was what I wanted to do or not which was a big part of the reason I decided to try it out. My first few weeks was mostly sitting behind a desk but about a month into working there I was given a class to lead each week. At first I was nervous and wasnt sure if the participants where gonna be happy with what I put together for them. The group that comes to that class was very helpful and provided a lot of feedback and encouragement. Since then I have worked to make my classes better each week and my responsibilities have expanded to 3 classes a week and a couple of personal plans. It took me a while to come to the decision but I eventually realized that I really did enjoy working with people in the gym and that it was something I wanted to continue doing after graduation. The PARCS program was instrumental in helping me to realize what I wanted to do with my degree.
